Thank you to the Chapin Wright Flatirons Foundation for their generous support of our Outdoor Education Endowment.

The Flatirons Scholarship was established more than 60 years ago by Sue and Chuck Hall of Boulder. When the Halls moved to Aspen in the late 1960s, they brought the scholarship with them, continuing its mission of supporting Aspen High School students upon graduation. In 1972, Chapin Wright was awarded the scholarship but tragically died in an automobile accident on his graduation day. In his memory, the scholarship was renamed the Chapin Wright Flatirons Foundation Scholarship.

In 2016, the Aspen Valley Land Trust (AVLT) sought support to secure the Outward Bound basecamp that Aspen Middle School has used for its 8th grade Outdoor Education trip since the 1960s. The Chapin Wright Flatirons Foundation stepped in, and the site was renamed the Chapin Wright Marble Basecamp. Chapin Wright was known as a “very charismatic and outdoor-oriented” soul, and his powerful journal entries from his time at Outward Bound beautifully captured the spirit of the newly named basecamp.

This year, the foundation approached AEF with the wish to dissolve the scholarship and distribute its funds to meaningful organizations that embody the spirit of Chapin Wright. We are honored to steward this gift and incorporate it into our growing Outdoor Education Endowment.
